World of Warcraft Offers New Character Transfer Options

Players can now move from PVE to PVP servers.

Blizzard has enabled paid character transfers from PVE to PVP servers in World of Warcraft. This policy reversal comes over two years after the server transfer program first started, which until now restricted character moves from certain server types.

A major part of leveling up on a PVP server is being constantly subject to attacks from other players — often much higher level than you. Many PVP devotees show serious contempt for players who reached the level cap on so-called “carebear” servers, as they consider this trial-by-fire a sort of initiation ritual. The drawbacks to allowing these two groups to intermingle have always been a concern.

“Because World of Warcraft has matured significantly since the inception of Paid Character Transfers, we don’t feel that PVE-to-PVP transfers will have the negative impact on the game that we initially wanted to avoid when we started the service in 2006,” a Blizzard employee clarified on the developer’s forums, adding, “This change will provide more mobility and freedom for players to experience the game with friends or play in the type of environment they’re looking for.”

Giving players more choices is usually a good idea, even if those choices come with some growing pains. Something tells us that no matter how bitter the PVP guys get, it’s probably not going to put a dent in that monstrous subscriber base.

Using your squadmates strategically is key in this first-person shooter, especially at the higher difficulty levels, since neither you nor the soldiers you command can survive long in an unsecured position. Fortunately, you have a squad of bazooka-wielding infantrymen to help eliminate enemy cover. Whether it’s a simple wooden fence, a sturdy sandbag wall, or even an abandoned car, few things can withstand your team’s firepower.

The second chapter of the game has you battling solo through an enemy-held mansion, then leading your squad to destroy a bridge, and finally taking out a group of entrenched enemy forces. Developer Gearbox has created a world that makes the tired World War II genre feel interesting, at least for one more campaign. The richly detailed graphics are especially impressive, making picking out your enemies and distinguishing friend from foe easy.

The level of sophistication in your squadmates is impressive — their ability to take orders, suppress fire, and open up the path for either a solo attack or team assault works well. For players new to the series, the introduction of each new element is gradual and easy to get the hang of. In addition, the wide-open stages, while linear, look to provide plenty of room for improvisation when it comes to completing your mission objectives.

But it’s not all bloodshed and drama on the battlefield. We also came across one of the “Kilroy was here” drawings. Each map has several of the drawings hidden in out-of-the-way places for enterprising players to seek out. The game is coming out later this month, so it won’t be long before you’re searching and planning your own squad’s tactics for yourself.
